Okay diagnostic tests show the HD has failed on my Dell XPS 420. It's about 3 years old. I can replace the HD, and have to figure out how to get the new one all set up. I have backups of data, fortunately.

Is it worth replacing the HD? I don't want to do this and then have some other component fail 2 months down the road.

Consider replacing with an SSD drive if the laptop is in otherwise good shape.

I have had good success with Intel 5xx and Samsung 830 series.

I have just installed this: http://goo.gl/Y9Y62 in my desk and it's remarkable :)

PS:
My Windows Experience rating for the Intel SSD is 7.5, and the Samsung is 7.7. Note the rating tops out at 7.9. Both machines are SATA 2 interfaces,

The .2 rating delta will never be detectable by a person.

I go from cold boot to logged in and Doing Stuff in 30 seconds.
