What has been seen cannot be unseen
Aug. 15th, 2010 07:15 pmA little while back, I watched The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo from Netflix. I wish now I hadn't. Yes, it was rated R, but there's R, and then there's RRRRRRRRRR (tantamount to an X). But the thing that put me off most about it was that the scenes I really wish I could "unsee" now had no reason to be in the movie. They were there for characterization, but that could have been done without such graphic sexual violence. So, even though one of the main themes of the movie is how despicable violence against women is, because these scenes are so unnecessary and graphic, it's like the watcher of the movie becomes a willing participant in the very thing the movie is supposed to be against. I remember when The Empire Strikes Back was released in 1980, it was banned in a Nordic country for being too violent. If that's the case, then this movie should never be shown in that country. This movie was far more violent.
The mystery was good enough, but the movie was 2 1/2 hours long. If they'd cut out the first half-hour, it would have been much better.
