Further schooling?

In my career researches, I've come across other careers I would like where further schooling would be necessary (i.e. graduate studies). Given the three general directions I'm looking into (artistic, information/research, computer programming), I don't know how useful graduate studies would be for each one. I would imagine for artistic, nobody cares if you have a graduate degree, as long as you know how to make good art. For information/research, I would think an MLS would be pretty much required. For IT, I'm on the fence as to how useful it would be (given the fact that I've never had training in IT except for a few trainings here and there and a couple of college courses way back in the days of BASIC and keeping all your programs on one 5.25" floppy disc).
Graduate studies COST. So I wouldn't want to expend the money unless it was going to result in a better job with better pay. Just some ruminations I've been having...feel free to comment or not.
