Hurricane Isabel
Sep. 19th, 2003 09:15 amWe were spared, compared to a lot of people around here. We never lost power, although it flickered, and we heard some horrific gusts last night bashing the trees against our windows. I haven't been outside yet, but the only damage I can see through the windows is vegetation in the parking lot. The news is showing quite a bit of damage around the areas closer to the bay and rivers. I think our work building is probably without power because the voicemail system isn't answering. Our excellent network administrator turned off the servers before leaving yesterday, over the objections of other staff members, and I must say, everyone will probably be glad he did.
We have to boil any tap water if we need to use it. Three water processing plants in Fairfax County are without power, so they're telling everyone to conserve water. I have noticed a drop in water pressure, just this morning.
I tried to call my parents down in southeastern Virginia, and the call wouldn't go through, so I imagine they've probably got their generator powering the freezer, their small TV, a lamp, and a fan. Phone lines are probably down as well.
I'll probably take a walking survey of the area, just to see what I can see. The federal government is closed again today, along with all area schools and many businesses.
