Just got back from seeing Stardust with
the_gneech and
jamesbarrett. It's quite different from the book, but both the book and the movie are very good, I'm happy to report! Alas, this movie is destined to become a cult favorite and make most of its money in the international market on DVD. Not that that's a bad thing, but it won't make Hollywood sit up and take notice. As with Princess Bride, they didn't know how to sell it, so the most effective marketing campaign has been word of mouth with Neil Gaiman fans. It came in 4th with $9M after Rush Hour 3, The Bourne Ultimatum, and The Simpsons Movie. Well, at least it did better than Daddy Day Camp. If it matters to anyone, it's got 73% on rottentomatoes.com.
If you want a fun, adventurous, fantastic tale (but not high fantasy), go see it.
