Recount! Recount!
Nov. 8th, 2006 07:43 amWhat, again? Last night, when I went to bed, George Allen had 50% of the vote, Webb had 49% of the vote, and the third party candidate had 1%. This morning, when I got up, with 99% of the precincts reporting, Webb has 50% of the vote, Allen has 49%, and the third party candidate has 1%. There are only about 6,000 votes separating Webb and Allen. There's going to be a recount.
The first really close vote I ever saw was when Doug Wilder was elected governor of Virginia. That was in the early 90s. It seems like ever since then, we regularly have these votes that are so close they have to have a recount. It just makes me wonder what brought about this situation. Did some segment of the voting population that didn't used to vote suddenly start voting? Or is it just that the political climate of the country as a whole is a lot more contentious than it used to be? (I know the answer to that is "yes," but I wonder how much of this phenomena can be attributed to that factor.)
