Classical music on DC airwaves
Jan. 23rd, 2007 01:08 pmWGMS has switched its format to some kind of pop station, just like a dozen other stations in the area. The deal with Dan Snyder, owner of the Redskins, hasn't gone through. Bonneville, the station owners, decided to change the format to pop-rock and donate WGMS' classical recordings collection to one of the PBS stations in the area, WETA. When you try to go to WGMS' website, you get forwarded to WETA. And according to the Washington Post, WETA's board has authorized them to switch from a talk-news format back to a classical music format if WGMS stopped playing classical.
So sorry WGMS is gone, but hopefully WETA will fill the void. It just seems like the nation's capital should have at least one station playing classical music.
