The prospect of our housing costs effectively doubling with the house purchase has me looking at how we can save money elsewhere. We've each got cell phones, and we currently have a traditional landline phone from Verizon. My biggest hesitation in getting rid of the landline phone is that if the cell service goes down for some reason, we'd be stuck without a phone. Same for getting VOIP: if the cable service goes down, we'd be without phone service.

I'm not sure how big a deal that might be or how likely it might be. We don't use the landline phone that much anymore. It's just that between the two cell phones and the landline, we're paying over $100 a month.
